Bridge the Gap was founded by John Richards who has personal experience of living and working with disabilities - John was born with Spina Bifida and four years later became visually impaired through hydrocephalus.
Following the then traditional route of the visually impaired, John trained as a shorthand typist. However, this was not challenging enough for John and he studied for 'A' levels before working to gain an Honours degree in Social Policy and a qualification in social work.
He spent six years as a hospital social worker, assisting people facing terminal illness, limb amputation and other life-changing experiences. This was followed by time as a senior policy officer at the Royal Association for Disability and Rehabilitation and a further eight years with Buckinghamshire Social Services, providing assessment of need and provision of support for people with disabilities and their families.
Seeing a need for commercial training, John founded Bridge the 6ap In addition, he has held a number of posts with voluntary organizations dealing with disability including pressure groups, sports and leisure organisations and talking newspapers. He is currently area advisor for a national disability charity and leads Milton Keynes Torch Fellowship for blind and partially sighted people.
